Statement to the Press |
 |
In spite of the fact that Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is under criminal investigation, the Council for Peace and Security calls upon the Government of Israel to press on with peace negotiations with Syria and the Palestinians.
The Council sees the recent Paris meeting important and an initiative that should be pursued. The investigation should not be made an excuse for equivocation.

| Council Members Hold Discussion with Prime Minister |
 |
Members of the Management of the Council for Peace and Security met with Prime Minister Mr Ehud Olmert on Thursday 21 February 2008.

Mr Olmert opened with a general review. This was followed by questions and comments from the Council members to which the Prime Minister responded.
A point raised about removing illegal settlements in Judea and Samaria led Mr Olmert to state that at the moment he was putting all his effort into the negotiation process, and other matters would be receiving attention in due course. He was confident that it would be possible to reach a framework agreement within a reasonable time. But Israel would be firm on two points: There could be no question of a full return to the 1967 borders; Urban building and development would continue everywhere within the municipal boudaries of Jerusalem.
The meeting which lasted for over an hour, was cordial and informative.

A secure Israel within recognized Borders

Disregarding for the time being the loaded issues of Jerusalem and refugees, it is proposed to reach a territorial agreement in which Israel swaps some six percent of the occupied territories for a similar area of her own.
